As you are aware, there has been a significant uptake in the use of Mounjaro as part of weight management in the UK. While this brings much improvement in the quality of life of many, we also need to bring to your awareness possible interactions with oral contraception and HRT i.e. pills if taken alongside Mounjaro.
Mounjaro works by slowing down the movement of food through your digestive system. Thus, you feel full for a longer period. As a result of this, if you are taking oral contraception, they could be less effective, thereby not protecting you from a pregnancy. To minimise the risk of an unintended pregnancy, please ensure that you use condoms in addition to your contraceptive pill for a period of four weeks after starting the medication and following each increase in Mounjaro dosage.
If you are a female of childbearing age and are not using contraceptives while taking Mounjaro, please be aware that Mounjaro is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to insufficient data regarding its safety to the unborn baby. If you are planning on becoming pregnant, it’s advised that you stop you mounjaro at least one month before trying to conceive.
For women taking oral progesterone as part of your HRT regimens, use of Mounjaro alongside your HRT could affect how effectively your oral hormone replacement therapy (HRT) works. The lining of your womb (endometrium) might not be sufficiently protected if you are taking oral progesterone as part of your HRT. This is an important consideration for your ongoing health and wellbeing to minimise the risk of conditions such as endometrial cancer.
If you wish to discuss your current HRT regimen or explore possible alternative options, please do not hesitate to contact the practice for advice and support. We are here to assist you in finding the most suitable approach for your needs.
